Introduction of robots in architecture has an impact on process and result as it leads to novel design conceptualisation inspired by these new methods of making. In this context, it is crucial to establish links between computational design, virtual interfaces, and customized robotically supported physical modes of production, which is addressed in the workshop Seamless Variation. The workshop focuses on two types of change and differentiation: On the one hand it introduces seamless change from one robotic mode of production to another and proposes efficient ways of fusing different production methods, and on the other hand it addresses seamless, informed, and differentiated material distribution at different scales implying addition, removal and change of material where needed and as needed.
Seamless Variation is a two-day workshop on Design to Robotic Production (D2RP) processes. The first day starts with a short introduction on past, present, and future of robotics in architecture, and continues with the description of the design brief and some initial material experimentation with the robot. Towards the evening the first design review session takes place in order to discuss and define strategies for materialization and robotic production. On the second day the refinement of D2RP processes for each of the design projects and start of the robotic production process is initiated. Several custom-made robot end-effectors will be available during the workshop, which are creatively applied in an informed D2RP process, where needed and as needed.
The Robotic Building (RB) team from Hyperbody at the Faculty of Architecture, TU Delft, offers the D2RP workshop on Seamless Variation. The RB team consists of Henriette Bier, Sina Mostafavi, Ana Maria Anton and Serban Bodea.
